Utah's West Desert is a wide expanse
of untouched desolate land. As uninhabitable as it seems, it is
teaming with wildlife and is home to many things including the
majestic golden eagle, elusive coyotes, chukar partridges (an excellent
game bird that the locals relish), pronghorn antelope, mustangs
(you know, the feral horses; not the muscle car), badgers, and
rattle snakes. Just to name a few.
There are a lot of places and sights to see. From ancient bristle
cone pines atop the wind strewn Notch Peak to 1800's mining cabins
that still are standing. Impressive geological formations such
as lava flows that once bubbled right from the ground, trilobite
fossil beds, and topaz that can be found without any digging or
equipment required. You, your family, children, and friends can
have hours of fun and there is even the possibility of finding
topaz that could be worth a pretty penny.
The west desert also offers some fantastic star gazing for the
amateur on up to the most experienced astronomer. With the lack
of air pollution and artificial light, you can view your favorite
constellations with amazing clarity, fathom at the brightness
and seemingly unending arm of our home galaxy - the Milky Way.
These are just a few things that one can bask in and enjoy in
